As mortgage fraud cases continue to rise, consumers should be aware of the warning signs of fraud, and know where to report mortgage broker fraud if necessary. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with the Department of Housing and Urban Development-Office of the Inspector General, the Internal Revenue Service, the Postal Inspection Service, and other state and local agencies, are working together to identify and investigate cases of alleged mortgage fraud, and refer them for the appropriate criminal prosecution as needed. Mortgage loan fraud generally takes the form of either fraud for property or fraud for profit. Fraud for property usually occurs when minor misrepresentations are made in order to obtain more favorable loan terms in order to purchase a primary family residence, such as by embellishing true levels of income and assets. On the other hand, fraud for profit involves larger schemes that are of greater concern to law enforcement agencies. For example, participants in fraud for profit schemes typically receive compensation stemming from inflated appraisals and fraudulent loan documents. Fraud for profit may involve participants from all aspects of the home loan transaction, including mortgage brokers, title examiners, and loan officers.
